CIPA, also known as the Japanese "Camera & Imaging Products Association"[1] announced two new standards on January 3, 2004.

CIPA Rating

CIPA Rating is a measurement of the number of pictures a digital still camera can take on a single battery charge. Although optional for member companies to abide by, it is used to help make it easier for users to compare digital cameras directly. The factors below are used to determine the estimated battery mileage for each camera:

  1. All functions shall be utilized to their full extent under default factory settings
  2. Batteries used
  3. Image quality mode
  4. Pixel number
  5. Flash photography
  6. Object distance
  7. Subject and brightness
  8. Recording medium
  9. Motor driven optical zoom operation
  10. AE/AF operation
  11. Operating environment
  12. Use of moving image and audio
  13. White balance
  14. Shake compensation
  15. End-of-test criteria
  16. Color monitor on/off mode
  17. Handling when recording medium is full
  18. Handling of playback mode
  19. Shooting intervals
  20. Power off frequency and intervals[2]

Note: The camera vendor is responsible for the fairness of the reported results.[3]
