Precision Dimming is the label used by Samsung to describe their use of Local Dimming in edge-lit LED LCD HDTVs. Precision Dimming uses edge mounted LEDs to control the lighting of variable size, diamond-shaped areas – effectively providing Local Dimming. These LED lights can then be dimmed individually rather than as groups to improve black levels. This provides greater performance improvements over global dimming, which is the lowering and raising of the backlight brightness as a whole.[1]
